Extensions

These sketches illustrate just how the term 'home extension' can have such a broad meaning.

This first set of drawings shows two extensions to a former rectory - a four car garage with games room above and a conservatory linking the rectory to the converted barn.

The property is in a conservation area and considerable care was taken to ensure that the designs were complementary to the original architecture.

With particular regard to the conservatory, the issue of proper design values does have an ironic twist. Would you believe that the planning authority refused permission and suggested that, 'due to the building being in a conservation area ........ a Victorian style conservatory would be more appropriate' - - with a Georgian rectory????

Site Plan

The Old Rectory

I submitted an appeal against the Council's decision, arguing that a conservation area was for the benefit of future generations to appreciate good architectural development in proper historical context and not to recreate some individual's idealised concept of 'chocolate box' England.

The appeal was successful and the development went ahead.

This second example is a modest extension compared to the ones above, but nevertheless required the same attention to design.

It is a Garden Room serving as an occasional dining area, family room, sun room, etc.

Due to its size, purpose and position, it did not require planning permission or Building Regulations approval - although the local authority did need reminding of the relevant regulation before they conceded to the latter.
